Poster with a historical map of the old Swedish Caribbean colony. St Barts is today a paradise for jet setters, but is also an important part of Sweden's not-so-glorious colonial history. The island was sold by the French to Sweden in 1784 in exchange for trading rights in Gothenburg and was kept until 1878 when it was sold back. The capital is still called Gustavia after Gustav III. This illustration, by the island's doctor and surveyor Samuel Fahlberg from 1801, was the best map available in the 20th century.
