Gothenburg's art museum was built in 1923 in connection with the Jubilee exhibition of the same year. At first they really just wanted some kind of monumental building to end the Avenyn. The architectural consortium ARES erected a building that brought together features from Roman antiquity with Swedish 20th-century classicism. The museum today has the foremost collection of Nordic art from the 1880s and 1890s, and is Sweden's third largest museum after the National Museum and the Modern Museum in Stockholm.
Creator: ARES (Arvid Bjerke, Ragnar Ossian Swensson, Ernst Torulf and Sigfrid Ericson)
