Poster with cover sheet of Handbook for Immigrants to America, published by the Swedish Emigrant Association in Chicago in 1869. During 1850-1930, approx. 1.2 million Swedes emigrated to America, approximately 20% of the population. Several years of poor growth in the late 1860s and 1880s led to an acute risk of starvation and many felt no other way out than to move. The dream of America was closely linked to the idea of having one's own land, but it was not always easy to know how to behave in the new host country. Therefore, a number of guides and handbooks were published to help the emigrants, who rarely set foot outside their parish, find their way and find their way in America.
