Poster with a photograph of ladies working in the equipment room at Stockholms Allmänna Telefon AB (the predecessor to Ericsson) on Malmskillnadsgatan in 1902. From the very beginning, telephoning was a distinctly female profession where there were clear boundaries; the switchboard would speak clearly, be well-educated, polite and address the subscribers (the callers) in their tone - often people from the upper echelons of society. The job was sought after due to this status and the fact that it was one of the few opportunities women had at the turn of the century where they could independently earn an income.
